Things to Consider
We all know how important it is to find the right ping pong paddle. But with so many options on the market, it can be tough to know where to start. We’ve compiled this list of tips and tricks so you can make an informed decision when buying!
Purpose and Price
If you’re only playing ping pong at an amateur level, a paddle under $50 is an excellent choice.
When you are buying a ping pong paddle, there are two main factors that you should keep in mind: your budget and your purpose for playing. If you are a casual player who just wants to play for fun, then you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a high-end paddle. However, if you are serious about playing competitively, then you will need to invest in a better quality paddle. If you feel like you’re ready for the next step, read our article about the best ping pong paddles under $100 and best ping pong paddles for intermediate players.
The second factor to consider is your purpose for playing. If you are only going to play occasionally, then you don’t need to buy a professional-grade paddle. However, if you plan on playing frequently or competitively, then you will need a higher-quality paddle.
When you are considering your budget and your purpose for playing, it is important to keep in mind that you get what you pay for. A higher quality paddle will cost more money, but it will also perform better and last longer. If you are serious about playing ping pong, then you should invest in a high-quality paddle.
A paddle’s main component is the blade. It is most often constructed of wood, although the ITTF permits a tiny amount of other fibrous material such as carbon fiber or compressed paper. A table tennis blade must be at least 85% wood and contain no more than 7.5% of the total thickness or 0.35mm in non-wood materials to qualify as competition grade.
Surprisingly, the size, shape, and weight of a ping pong paddle are irrelevant. All that matters is that the blade be flat and rigid.
Ping pong paddles are made up of numerous thin layers of wood or other material.
The 5-ply and 7-ply paddles are usual on the market, with a combination of soft and hard woods and composite materials helping to provide performance.
The most significant distinction between carbon and wood is predictability. Because wood is a natural substance, it does not have the same consistency throughout. Simply said, a wood-made blade will be somewhat distinctive, but with time and practice, you’ll learn its quirks and acclimate yourself to it. All blades must be at least 85% composed of wood, however, the small proportion of carbon fiber in the blend will add some extra precision, uniform bounce, stability, and speed to the paddle.
The side of the blade used to make contact with the ball must be evenly covered in rubber. There are two permitted types: the ordinary pimpled rubber and the sandwich rubber.
The pimpled rubber (or pip rubber) is made of a single layer of non-cellular rubber, which may be natural or synthetic. It has evenly dispersed pimples (known as “pips”) with a density of 10 to 30 per square centimeter. The pimples can face in, so you hit the ball with the pimple, or out, so the pimples are facing the ‘sponge’.
A sandwich rubber has a soft feel and produces little vibration, making it easier to control the ball.
The sandwich rubber is made up of a single layer of cellular rubber (often known as a sponge) covered with a single outer layer of standard pimpled rubber, with a pimping thickness of less than 2mm. The sponge layer’s thickness and density control the ball’s speed.
More speed is possible if the sponge is thicker (because the ball bounces off the bat quicker). More control is possible if the sponge is thinner (because the ball takes longer to bounce, giving you more time to react).
On the other hand, more seasoned players can try out a thicker sponge. The majority of bats are made of 2mm rubber.
The table tennis racket is classified according to the speed at which it hits the ball. The speed is related to the thickness of the sponge and can be classified as follows:
Class A: very slow (up to 22 m/s)
Class B: slow (22-34 m/s)
Class C: medium (34-46 m/s)
Class D: fast (46-59 m/s)
Class E: very fast (59-70 m/s)
The speed of the racket is not everything. If you are a beginner, it is better to choose a Class B or C racket so that you can have more control over the ball. You can find them in our review on the best ping pong paddles for beginners. If you are an advanced player, you can choose a Class D or E racket for more speed and power.
The first thing you need to do is identify what type of player you are. Are you an offensive player who likes to take control of the game and put your opponents on the defensive? Or are you a defensive player who looks to counter your opponent’s every move?
Once you know what type of player you are, it will be easier to select a paddle that suits your playing style.
If you’re an offensive player, you’ll want a paddle with more spin. This will give you more control over the game and help you keep your opponents on their toes. If you’re a defensive player, you’ll want a paddle with less spin. This will allow you to defend against your opponent’s shots and keep them from gaining an advantage.
The control is determined by the size of the paddle and the thickness of the sponge. A larger paddle will offer more control, while a thinner sponge will make the ball bounce more.
The control of the paddle is what tells you how much spin you can put on the ball. It also affects the speed of your shots. If you are a beginner, then you should look for a paddle with good control. This will help you keep the ball in play and not make too many mistakes. There are three types of controls:
Offensive: These paddles have softer rubbers which give you more spin. The downside is that they are less durable and can wear out quickly.
All-round: These paddles have a happy medium between control and spin. They are also more durable than offensive paddles.
Defensive: These paddles have hard rubbers which make it difficult for your opponent to return your shots. However, they are not as good at generating spin.
If you are a beginner, then you should look for an all-round paddle. This will give you the best chance of success while you are still learning the game. Once you have more experience, then you can start to experiment with different types of control.
The short answer is no. The vast majority of paddles are not asymmetrical and will have the same properties on both sides. However, there are a small number of players who believe that having different colors provides them with a mental advantage during play.
You can clean your paddle with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives, as this can damage the paddle. Rinse the paddle thoroughly after cleaning to remove all soap residue. Allow the paddle to air dry completely before storing.
The Infinity Edge by Joola is our top pick because it has excellent speed, spin, and control and is made with high-quality materials that make this paddle durable as well! The 2mm inverted Driver 42 rubber sponge provides great rebound while providing quick handling thanks in part to its five plywood construction base.
With its 2-mm inverted rubber sponge, 5-ply extra light blade, and concave Italian composite handle design the Stiga Titan T1260 is a top-of-line table tennis racket that provides players with excellent control over the ball without breaking your bank.
The AirBlades AB-5000 5 Star is one of the best ping pong paddles under $50 that has an innovative Slopehandle design. It provides ultimate comfort and balanced performance thanks in part from its premium inverted rubber, 2 mm sponge, blades made out of Ayous wood followed by Koto wood for added durability.
We hope that now you feel confident in picking the perfect paddle for your budget and skill level!
