Game Style
Filus Ruwen uses a chopping/cut-type style. He also has a back-handed racket but scores many points on his forehand. He uses a shake-hand grip. Additionally, he plays a defensive game, which enables him to play a small distance from the table. Ruwen Filus plays all strokes, including a backhand topspin. This demands great physical and mental strength.
Ruwen Filus Racket Flip
Ruwen Filus racket flip is one of his trademark game styles. A racket flip is where, instead of hitting the ball straight onto the face of the bat, you face it down and spin the racket along an axis with your wrist. That bat remains at more or less the same angle to the table, but you move it forward and to the side over the ball. The impetus of the hit is still forward, but you mainly use your wrist.
Teachers and Influences
Not much is known about who exactly coached Ruwen Filus, but he claims that he improved dramatically when he was taught to play a defensive game — at age 9. At the end of half a year, he was the number one player of his age in all of Germany, simply from that one change.

Final Thoughts
Ruwen Filus has made a name for himself in the table tennis world with his defensive style. He’s ensured his mental and physical fitness are top-notch, enabling him to compete at the top level. He also played from a very young age, and the competitive mindset was there from at least age nine. He is very tall for a table tennis player, which is to his advantage in reaching otherwise unreachable shots. Ruwen has been able to play on both European and international stages. His focus on all shots means that he’s slightly unpredictable to his opponents, which is a great advantage. We may see more of this man yet.
