Biography

Yangzi Liù is a China-born paddler that won a second-tier scholarship in the Australia Sports Hall of Fame and Mentoring program in 2023. She is the second table tennis player to be chosen to join the program. She started playing the game at 5 with her father, a high school coach. She and her father moved to Shanghai so that she could get the best chances to pursue a career in table tennis. She showed a lot of promise and determination and put in a lot of work while competing in domestic competitions. In 2015 she became the youngest of sixty players invited to practice with their national team. In 2015 she also took part in their table tennis championship and won her team a promotion to the table tennis championship.

By 2016 Yangzi Liu had already become more experienced in table tennis and was sent an invite to practice with the Korean team. She was essential in their training for the Rio Olympics in 2016. By the time she finished high school in 2017, she had started a professional career that took her far from home to Portugal, where she had participated in the local games for some time, won many games for her club, and completed the season almost perfectly.

Career

She made her first international appearance in 2018 at a junior tournament, where she won the under-18 category, which began her career in tennis. She moved to Australia in 2019, where she was not only selected to represent Australia's table tennis team. Her first championship representing Australia was the Estonian Open 2019, and she won both the senior and junior titles.

She also participated in the Finnish games, and she won the finals against the challenger from Japan. She was able to keep training with her head coach during the covid 19 years and was able to brush up on the technical aspects of her games. In 2021 she went to Europe and won three titles at the world juniors titles open, his record placed above other Australian athletes awarding her a world junior ranking of no 6. Her World Seniors tournaments were also played well, which led to her winning her first career win. Even though Yangzi Liu missed out on a Golden opportunity to play against the Singaporean Jian Zeng, she still ranked 31st according to the ITTF ranking.

In 2022 she competed with the Melbourne national and prepared for the 2022 commonwealth games and Australian National championship. In the Australian national championship, Her outstanding performance in the women's team and women's singles events earned her gold medals. Subsequently, she ascended to the highest position in the Australian rankings. In recognition of her remarkable achievements, she was bestowed with the title of the most promising player and paddler in Australia that year.

Later, in 2022 she made her first appearance in the commonwealth games. She and her team won a bronze medal. She also won Australia's first medal for table tennis singles in a major event.

Playing Style

Yangzi Liu is a right-handed player that favors the shake-hand offensive playing style. This style is not easy to develop and would have required a lot of practice.
